Orthosport Victoria offers a number of fellowships focused across a variety of areas in orthopaedic surgery. Our fellowships include Knee, Foot & Ankle, Hand, and Trauma & Reconstruction.

Clinical / Research Fellowship

The aim of the fellowship is to provide experience in the diagnosis, management, and ongoing care, both surgical and non-surgical, of all disorders of the knee, which may present to an orthopaedic surgeon with a sub-specialty practice in knee surgery.

Fellowship Description

This fellowship provides a comprehensive exposure to all disorders of the knee. The fellow will be exposed to all areas of knee surgery, including arthroscopy, ligament reconstruction, joint preservation osteotomy, and arthroplasty, as well as some trauma including major ligament disruptions. In total, the fellow will attend four surgical sessions per week as a surgical assistant.

At Box Hill Hospital, the fellow will be the primary surgeon at one operating list per week and will attend one outpatient clinic per week.

There is a strong focus on clinical research and there are research links with La Trobe University. The fellow will be expected to devote at least three sessions per week to research activities, and contribute to at least one paper suitable for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

Overall this fellowship provides a world-class experience in all aspects of knee surgery with an excellent balance between clinical and research activities.

Clinical / Research Fellowship

The aim of this fellowship is to provide experience in the diagnosis, management, and ongoing care of patients affected by conditions of the Foot and Ankle.

Fellowship Description

Selection Criteria

The applicant must be a qualified orthopaedic surgeon or have at least senior registrar experience.

The applicant must be prepared to commit the vast majority of their time to clinical work in the area of foot and ankle surgery and be involved in research projects.

Applications must be accompanied by a current Curriculum Vitae and the names and contact details of appropriate referees. A phone interview may also be required.

The Fellowship

A 6-12 month predominantly clinically-based fellowship focused on all aspects of foot and ankle surgery. This is jointly conducted through the private and public systems and particularly includes work in the areas of trauma (acute and late reconstruction), sports medicine, and arthritis surgery. There is an additional focus on the use of arthroscopic and minimally invasive techniques.

An opportunity is usually available for the successful applicant to perform elective surgery in the public hospital system under the supervision of Mr. Harvinder Bedi.

There are no specific on-call requirements for the fellowship, but it may be possible for the applicant to participate in after-hours trauma work in order to enhance their clinical experience and supplement their income.

An opportunity and encouragement for clinical-based research is also provided.

Funding Arrangements

A Stipend of $50,000 per annum is available and will be administered by Box Hill Hospital.

There are additional potential sources of income including:

  • Payments for elective and after-hours work performed in the public hospital system.
  • Assisting fees for private surgical assistance.
  • The applicant is cautioned that these additional sources of funding may be subject to visa restrictions and may not be available to all fellows.

Clinical / Research Fellowship (AOA Accredited Fellowship)

The aim of this fellowship is to provide experience in the diagnosis, management, and ongoing care of patients affected by conditions of the Hand and Wrist.

Fellowship Description

This position is suitable for a candidate preparing for a career in hand surgery. The successful candidate will be involved in emergency and elective cases, on-call from the emergency department, and outpatient care. The candidate will also be involved in continuing education for undergraduate students, residents, and registrars in the surgical training program, journal club, and audit. The candidate will be expected to complete clinical or laboratory research suitable for presentation and publication.

Clinical / Research Fellowship

The aim of this fellowship is to provide experience in the diagnosis, management, and ongoing care of orthopaedic trauma patients.

Fellowship Description

The aim of this fellowship is to provide experience in the diagnosis, management, and ongoing care of orthopaedic trauma patients. It is primarily based at Victoria’s level one trauma centre, which manages over 1000 major (ISS>12) trauma patients per year. There is an emphasis on managing all orthopaedic trauma, with a sub special interest in lower limb deformity correction and complex lower limb trauma.

The fellow attends a minimum of 7 trauma theatre sessions a fortnight being exposed to general trauma, complex foot, and ankle trauma, complex lower limb trauma, and fine wire frame trauma and limb deformity management. These theatre sessions are one hundred percent consultant supervised enabling the best possible educational experience. The fellow will have an active teaching role themselves with registrars, residents of allied health at the hospital.

There is a strong emphasis on research utilising databases and resources from Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Victorian Orthopaedic Trauma Outcomes Registry.

This fellowship is usually booked two to three years in advance.

Royal Melbourne Hospital Orthopaedic Unit also offers another two fellowship positions focusing on general trauma, pelvic trauma, and hip and knee arthroplasty.

Epworth Fellowship in Shoulder & Elbow Surgery

This is primarily a clinical fellowship encompassing all aspects of shoulder and elbow surgery. The main focus is the shoulder, with around 90% of the overall case load related to shoulder conditions. A small amount of trauma work is conducted.

Fellowship Description

A specific goal of the fellowship is in improvement of arthroscopic skills, particularly in the shoulder, and the management of sports injuries. Joint arthroplasty is performed with attention to computer assisted techniques and management of complex glenoid deformity and revision. Currently routine use of PSI and augmented reality technology is provided. Funding is multi-sourced and there is exposure to a variety of brands of arthroplasty and soft tissue repair implants.

The fellow will work with a number of upper limb surgeons in addition to the chief

supervisor and this is incorporated into the weekly timetable. Flexibility exists within the timetable to cater for particular interests and for research requirements. Additional expectations during the fellowship are attendance at journal reading evenings held through the Victorian Shoulder and Elbow Society (VSES) and at the quarterly Epworth orthopaedic morbidity and mortality audit. Quarterly meetings of the VSES are conducted and a short presentation at one of these is required. Monthly radiology meetings are conducted with affiliated centres.
